Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use an older edition of the book?
There are many changes between the 6th and the 8th edition of the textbook. In this latest edition, chapters 2 and 3 were merged , material was removed and new material added. The material in the new edition is more up-to-date, reflecting change in the design of modern operating systems. The chapters on processes and threads are larger in the new book; the chapter on virtual memory is very different. In general there are important differences. Let us rephrase the question:
Should you use the new book? Probably.
Your job is to follow the material and learn it, however you manage it. Books are expensive, yes, but so are college credits. The book can be sold when you are finished with it.
  • Will exams have questions about material not covered in class lectures?
Not intentionally, but if I somehow make a mistake and one slips in, it will not count towards the exam grade.
